A study published in Science Advances revealed that the world's largest bat family possesses two distinct copies of genes responsible for producing antibodies, specialized proteins that fight infections. This is unique, as all other known mammals have only one such set of genes. This discovery, made in vesper bats, fundamentally changes our understanding of how mammalian immune systems are organized and how they evolved. Professor Hannah Frank, a lead author, noted the unprecedented nature of this finding. The presence of two separate heavy-chain gene systems potentially allows bats to create a wider variety of antibodies. This insight highlights the importance of studying the adaptive immune system in bats, not just the innate system. While it doesn't fully explain bats' role as viral reservoirs, it provides a new direction for research.
