As Trump goes to China, what do Americans say about tariffs, Iran and world standing?

According to a recent NPR/Chicago Council on Global Affairs/Ipsos poll, as President Trump visits Beijing to meet with President Xi Jinping, Americans perceive China primarily as an economic rival aiming for global dominance. A significant majority (almost 80%) believe China aspires to be the leading world power, viewing this threat more in economic terms (56%) than military (29%). Despite this rivalry, Americans desire a robust trade relationship with China and advocate for reduced tariffs to mitigate costs for U.S. consumers. The poll indicates that tariffs are largely seen as detrimental to the U.S. cost of living, standard of living, job creation, and both the Chinese and American economies. Interestingly, while a majority view China as a rival (37%) or adversary (21%), a notable portion considers China a necessary strategic partner (20%). Among the countries surveyed, Russia is viewed most negatively, while Australia is seen as the strongest ally. The findings highlight the complex and multifaceted relationship between the U.S. and China, balancing competition with the need for economic cooperation.
