In a cave on the island of Hispaniola, scientists made a special discovery. Long ago, an owl lived in the cave. It brought a small animal called a hutia there to eat. The hutia's bones stayed in the cave. Later, bees came to the cave. They were looking for a place to build their nests. The bees found the hutia's jawbone. Inside the jawbone were small holes, called alveoli, where the teeth used to be. The bees used these alveoli as ready-made homes for their babies. This was very useful for them! The bees dug into the dirt but then found the fossilized bones. Over time, the bones became like stone. Paleontologists, scientists who study old bones, found this unusual scene. They carefully cleaned the bones and saw the bee nests inside. This discovery could have been missed if they weren't careful during the excavation. Lazaro Viñola Lopez, a student, found thousands of fossils in the cave. He was especially interested in the hutia because it is rarely found in other places on the island. The cave is called Cueva de Mono.
